布目夫婦桜　

NUNOME Meoto-zakura

角田山の麓にある、2本の桜は「布目夫婦桜」と呼ばれており、毎年美しい花を咲かせている。上堰潟公園の桜並木から少し外れたところでポツンと寄り添う2本の姿は、その名前の通りまるで夫婦のようであり、別名「寄り添う桜」とも呼ばれる隠れた名所である。その歴史は古く、50年ほど前からあるらしいが誰がいつ何のために植えたかなどその多くは謎に包まれている。

At the bottom of Mt. Kakuda, there is a couple of cherry trees called “Nunome Meoto-Zakura” which bloom beautifully every year. Apart from a row of cherry trees by in the Uwasekigata Park, the isolated pair side by side like a married couple, is a secret spot also called “snuggled cherry trees” It ages almost 50 years back and the origin is a mystery.

まき夏祭り　

MAKI NATSUMATSURI

まき夏まつりは毎年６月の巻神社大祭に合わせて行なわれる、新潟市で最も早く開催される夏まつり。新潟市西蒲区巻地区、まき鯛車商店街を舞台に、市民が一体となり民謡流しや御輿、多彩なパレード、よさこい演舞などが開催される。その歴史は古く、御輿御渡は江戸時代から続いている。五穀豊穣と無病息災を祈願して締めくくりに行われる担ぎ手の勇壮なもみと女性乗り手の華麗さが共演するやかた竿燈は圧巻。

The Maki Summer Festival is held in accordance with the Makigami Shrine Festival. It takes place earlier than any other festival in Niigata City. Beginning with folk music and the dancers dancing the Yakataokesa and Kanjinku, the festival goes on to include the Mikoshi Togyo (parade of portable shrines) passed down since the Edo period, the Dashi floats, and the fireworks display. A stunning and dynamic Yakata Kanto constitutes the finale to the festival.

まき夏祭り花火大会　

MAKI MATSUMATSURI FIREWORKS

「まき夏まつり」の中日に開催される、県内で一番早い花火大会で田んぼの真ん中から約200発の花火が打ち上げられる。絶景ポイントは、矢川ふれあい公園。間近で大迫力の花火を楽しむことができる。毎年多くの人々が夏のはじまりを知らせる美しい花火に酔いしれている。

It takes place during the Maki Summer Festival earlier than any other fire works in Niigata Prefecture with about 200 shots set off in the middle of the rice field. The best spot to watch is in Yagami Fureai Park where the viewers can enjoy the close dynamics of the fireworks. It fascinates many people as the beginning of summer.

澤将監の館　

Sawashogen-no-yakata

甲斐の国で武田信玄の家臣として仕えていた澤将監がかつて住んでいた館を現存する正確な家相図を基に、宮大工の手により、釘を一本も使わずに復元した木造建築。木材には全国からよりすぐったケヤキ材をふんだんに使っている。堂々とした建物はもちろん、ふすま絵や書、池泉回遊式庭園など、見応えのある史跡である。 現在は地域の教育・文化、コミュニティー形成の場として、また観光の拠点施設として利用。

The wooden architecture restored without nailing based on the precise blueprints of the original house of Sawa Shogun who served the Kai shogun, Shingen Takeda. The material is the best quality Japanese zelkova selected from all over the country. It is a quite impressive landmark with the stately main building, the sliding panel paintings, the calligraphy, and the stroll-round garden as a tourist spot and also as a educational and cultural facility for local community.

宝山酒造

Takarayama Brewery

1885年創業の岩室温泉の酒蔵。新潟の奥座敷と呼ばれる岩室温泉と越後一之宮の弥彦神社の中間に位置し、創業130年の歴史を持つこの蔵は、昔ながらの酒造りにこだわって醸す酒の数々が、多くの人に支持されている。大量生産はせず、杜氏始め、三人の蔵人が冬場極寒の越後の地で、「一冬楽しく人の和」をモットーに一滴一滴を大切に醸している。特に新潟県が開発した吟醸米「越淡麗」は、蔵の裏の田んぼで社員が栽培している。酒造りの様子は見学をすることもでき、見学後は大吟醸「宝山」やにごり酒の試飲もできる。

A sake brewery founded in 1885, located in between “backstage of Niigata”, Iwamuro Onsen and Yahiko Shrine of Echigo Ichinomiya, they have made classic sake for 130 years with traditional brewing method and widely supported by many fans. Instead of mass-production, just four creators including the master carefully brew each drips of sake with the slogan: “A winter with joy and harmony” in the severe cold Echigo winter. Especially the Niigata’s original sake rice “Koshitanrei” is cultivated in the rice field in the back of the brewery by their staff. There is a brewery tour to show the process and sake tasting is available after the tour.

宝山酒造のひやおろし　

takarayama hiyaoroshi

春先に絞った純米酒を一度だけ加熱してから貯蔵し、ひんやりとした蔵の中でひと夏ゆっくりと熟成させた「ひやおろし」は、この時期しか味わうことのできない旬のお酒。一般的な純米酒は出荷前に二度目の火入れをするが、ひやおろしは豊かな香りとコクをそのまま届けるために、後の火入れは一切行わない。添加物は一切加えず、自然に熟成された旬の酒ひやおろしのまろやかな香りと口いっぱいにひろがる旨みは、秋の味覚をより楽しませてくれる。

Hiyaoroshi is limited seasonal brews released in the autumn. The sake is brewed with new rice harvested in the previous autumn and stored after pasteurization in the spring and matured throughout the summer. Usually, standard sake is heated twice to pasteurize before shipping, however hiyaoroshi doesn’t go through heating process in order to keep flavors and aromas. Naturally brewed without additives, the seasonal sake, hiyaoroshi is full of flavors and aromas which enhances the autumn taste even richer.

種月寺

Syugetsuji-Temple

越後曹洞宗4大道場の一つで、1446年、曹洞宗の高僧、南英謙宗により開山された。曹洞宗越後４大道場の１つとして、多くの修行僧が修業に励んだ。当時の勢力はかなりのもので、末寺が100余りあったと言われている。火伏せに霊験あらたかで、毎年6月19日の開山忌には防火の護符が配布される。春には門前の桜並木が、秋には紅葉が美しい。国指定文化財。

One of the 4 biggest dojo of Echito Soto sect, Shugetsu-ji was found in 1446 by the high priest of the Soto sect, Kenso Nanei in which a large numbers of ascetic monks practiced and used to be very powerful with over a hundred of branch temples. It is believed to prevent fire and flood, they give away anti-fire charms on the memorial day of June 16th every year. They are famous for the spring cherry blossom at the gate row and the beautiful colored leaves in fall. One of the national cultural properties.

岩室甚句

Iwamuro Jinku

越後を代表する民謡「岩室甚句」は、農村部の酒盛や盆踊でうたわれていた唄を、昭和の初め、新潟・岩室の芸者が三味線の伴奏をつけ、節廻しをお座敷唄に改めたものである。その起こりは、正徳年間にさかのぼるとされ、温泉発見にわきたつ人々の踊り喜ぶ様から、重五郎という人物が案出したと伝えられている。なお、その歌詞にあるだいろ（蝸牛）は農民を、「角を出せ」は年貢米を出せとの意とされ、厳しい封建支配下の農民の反抗を表したものと言われている。他の新潟各地に伝わる、「越後甚句」に比べてテンポがゆったりとしており、湯上がりのけだるさのただようのが特徴。

"Iwamuro Jinku” is a folk song representing Echigo. It was previously a farmer’s song for drinking and festivals and revised with strings and new lyrics as a stage music by geishas of Iwamuro, Niigata in the beginning of the Showa era. It traces back to the Shotoku era when a man name Jugoro developed the song by looking at people dancing and celebrating the discovery of hot spring. I the lyrics, there is Dairo which means farmers, and “show us the horn” which means pressing the agricultural taxes, representing rebellion against the severe feudal establishment. It has slower tempo compared to other “Echigo Jinku”s of other areas of Niigata, characterizes drowsy after bath atmosphere.

岩室温泉 (濱松屋)

Iwamuro Hot-Spa

(Hamamatsu-ya)

岩室温泉は、別名「霊雁の湯」とも呼ばれている。村の庄屋・高島庄右衛門が見た夢に出てきた、白髪の老人から「老松の下の岩石に霊泉が湧き、これを浴すれば諸病和らぐ」というお告げがあり、村のはずれを探すと、一羽の傷ついた雁が傷を癒していたというエピソードが由来とされている。江戸時代より北国街道の宿場町として、又、弥彦神社の参拝者の精進落としの遊里として栄えてきた300年の歴史がある温泉。お座敷情緒を演出する越後芸妓発生の地でもある。泉質は硫黄臭の香る塩化土類泉。効能は筋肉痛や神経痛、疲労回復など。

Iwamuro Onsen(Hot-Spa), as known as “Reigan no Yu” which means “hot water of the wild geese spirit” named after the episode that the village headman, Shoemon Takashima dreamed of a old gray haired man who said “the spirit water flowing from the beneath the rock below the the old pine tree cure ailments” and found a wounded wild geese healing on the edge of the village. It prospered for over 300 years as a post station of Hokkoku Kaido and a red-light district for the worshipers of Yahiko Shrine from the Edo era, and also originated Echigo Geiko with Zashiki stage. Effective for muscle and nerve pain and fatigue.

創業1926年。80余年もの間、岩室せんべいの味を守り続けてきた老舗。ひとつひとつ手焼きで焼かれた瓦せんべいは、ほんのりと甘く、軽い。お年寄りから子供までに喜ばれ、お土産や贈答品にと、地元や遠方から来るお客が多い。その味わいには定評があり、全菓博においても何度か有功金賞を受賞している。わざとシケさせてやんわりさせて食べるのが地元の通、おすすめの食べ方。

Iwamuro Seika is a long-established cracker store founded over 80 years ago, famous for their hand made light weight and sweet tile crackers. They have young and old customers in and out of their area for souvenirs and gifts. Received gold award several times at National Confectionery Exposition. The locals favor when the cracker is moist and soft. Recommended.
